How I teach
Music can reach and have an effect on everyone. It can be powerful and transformative and is the essence of expression. Learning to play an instrument helps us to grow close with this amazing art form. In teaching, I believe it is essential to maintain a musical focus while developing the technical skills needed to play a string instrument well-- whether it is, for a beginner, to play one note beautifully, or, for the advanced student, to play a violin concerto with expression, music should always be approachable, fun, and rewarding. In working with my students, I look at each one as an individual and plan their program of study according to their needs and goals. Whether child or adult, home-schooler or public-schooler, every student is unique and will benefit from an individual plan of study. This can range from a comprehensive program of lessons-ensembles-theory classes to studies for remedial work or just private lessons to reinforce and support a student's participation in a school group or youth orchestra.
Drawing from a variety of repertoire and methods, I carefully design a program of study to meet each student's individual needs and goals.
Private lessons focus on technical skill and musical development, music reading and music theory (as appropriate).
Online lessons work well! I have found them to be a very viable and productive platform for learning (especially helpful during COVID-19 concerns).
Participating in ensemble groups and/or student recitals are available options.
Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss and explore what an ideal program of study may look like for you or your child.
